Mother Virlee Miller was born on October 8, 1936 to the late Lucy Samuels and Arthur Samuels in Girard, Georgia. Mother Virlee was one of ten children. All preceded her in death except one. She succumbed to eternal rest on Sunday, September 19, 2021 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
She was educated in the Georgia school system where she was very smart and did exceptionally well.
In 1955, she married the late Joe Nathan Miller, Sr. To this union, children were born: Joe Jr., Oscar, Denise, Marlene, Jerome, Jeff and Frances.
Virlee was gainfully employed throughout her lifetime. She found employment with the Philadelphia Nursing Home, PSFS Savings Bank, and as a cook at Daphne's Restaurant. Virlee Miller was a strong disciplinarian who did not spare the rod. Among her many attributes were: hard worker, go-getter, job performer and punctual in engagements. She did not like to be late.
Mother Virlee Miller was a Christian who loved the Lord and was a long time member of Greater Exodus Baptist Church, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She loved gospel music as well as listened to the radio broadcast of Bishop Louise Williams. Her hobbies included: cooking for her family and friends (she was an excellent cook), celebrating holidays, reading and doing crossword puzzles. Mother Virlee had a great sense of humor. She would crack jokes with family and friends. Some of her catch phrases were: "get with the program", "oh boy", and her favorite, "don't get it twisted if you didn't understand". She was loved and adored by many.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Nathan Miller, Sr.; her son, Oscar Miller; her parents, Arthur and Lucy Samuels; and eight siblings (Eugene, Sam, Willie, Alice, Melvina, Rosa, Douglas and Johnny).
Left to cherish her memories are her children. (2) Sons: Jerome Miller of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Joe Nathan Miller, Jr. (Janice) of Varnville, South Carolina; (3) Daughters: Denise Miller-Johnson, Sayiddah aka Marlene Miller-Johnson (Jeffrey), and Frances Miller, all of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; her sister, Rosa Samuels, a play son, Randy Washington; (7) grandchildren: Kevin, Juan, and Darius, all of South Carolina, Brandon of Arizona, Richard, Walter and Jaylon, all of Philadelphia; (20) great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
