The Obituary
Mary Louise Johnson, affectionately known as “Boss”, was the daughter of the late Mary Holman and John Moncrief. She was born in Blackville, South Carolina on November 14, 1925. Mary Louise transitioned from earth to glory on Monday, February 9, 2015.
She received Christ at an early age while attending Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, Blackville, South Carolina under the pastorate of the late Reverend Henry Bush. While living with her grandmother, Lydia Holman, Mary Louise attended the public schools of Blackville, South Carolina graduating from Macedonia High School. Upon graduation, she rejoined her mother in New York.
Upon her arrival in New York, Mary Louise joined Union Baptist Church, Brooklyn, New York under the leadership of the late Dr. A. A. Woods. At Union Baptist Church, she served the body of Christ as a Gospel Choir and Floral Club member. She became a charter member of Canaan Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend James D. Gamble, where she headed the Floral Club as well as serving as a Deacon. As the church transitioned to Jesus Christ Family under the leadership of the late Elder Jason C. Sumner, Mary Louise served as Mother of the Church and member of the Senior Ministry.
Mary Louise was married to her childhood sweetheart, the late Joe Johnson.
She was gainfully employed at a print shop, hat factory, and restaurant until she joined Kingsbrook Psychiatric Center, where she was employed for twenty-three years in the Food Service Department.
“Aunt Louise” as she was known, loved the Lord with all her heart. Her love for God ushered her into giving God praise as well as testifying of His goodness at every opportunity she was afforded. This she would do each Sunday morning service.
Mary Louise joins her parents (Mary and John) and her siblings (John Moncrief, Jr. and Maggie (Ernest, Sr.) Washington in Heaven.
While she did not have any biological children, she had many nieces, nephews, and adopted children whom she mentored and offered guidance. She leaves to cherish her memories a host of nieces and nephews: Emma R. Davis, Ernell (Ethel) Washington, Cherly L. (Sammie Lee) Williams, Cynthia D. Washington, Tania W. (Herbert) Smalls, Beverly A. Washington, and Ernest I. Washington, Jr., all of Blackville, South Carolina, Nancy Washington of California, Gerald I. Washington of Gardenia, California, and Shirley A. (Lonnie) Reed of Connecticut; A devoted god-daughter, Deborah Gamble of New York; A play daughter, Lelia Grayson; other relatives and friends.
