Deacon Ralph Smith, son of the late Orgen and Ruby Smith, was born in Hampton, SC on January 11, 1942. He departed this earthly life and was received by his heavenly father on February 3, 2015 at Hampton Regional Medical Center in Varnville, SC.
At an early age, he joined Samaritan Missionary Baptist Church in Varnville, SC where he served faithfully for many years and held numerous positions to include: Co-chairman of the Deacon Board, Founder of the Male Chorus, Sunday School Teacher and a member of the Trustee Board.
Deacon Ralph Smith graduated from the former North District Training School in 1961 and joined the United States Army. He served for five years and obtained the rank of Sergeant. After serving his country, he became employed by the former Westinghouse Company, from which he retired in 1994.
He was a mentor and a pillar of the community He became a member of the Town Council of Varnville, SC in 2010. During his tenure as councilman, he was known for his honesty and dedication. He was very devoted and he made a difference in the town Varnville, SC.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his loving wife, Mrs. Thelma Smith of the home; Four sons: Mr. Terry Lingard of Varnville, SC; Mr. Ralphie Tyrone Smith, Sr (Marlean), Mr. Lorenzo Smith (Aurora), and Mr. Kelley Smith (Coretta), all of Columbia, SC; Seven grandchildren; Four great grandchildren; Three goddaughters; Four sisters from Varnville, SC, one sister from Savannah, GA; Two brothers from Varnville, SC; Six brothers-in-law; Five sisters-in-law; A group of special friends: Mr. Oscar White, Brooklyn, New York; Deacon Harry Folk, Chief Tyrone Smith, Mr. Elmer McQuire, Mr. James Capers, all of Varnville, SC and Elder Lawrence Priester, Beaufort, SC; A host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
