Hampton, South Carolina—Funeral service for Mr. Rossie Lee Williams, 77, will be held on Friday, July 8, 2016, 1:00 p.m. at Harmonia Missionary Baptist Church. Committal, Interment will follow at Harmonia Church Cemetery. Reverend William Burison is the Eulogist of the hour.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, July 7, 2016 from 6-8 p.m. Washington’s Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.
Master Sergeant (United States Army, Retired) Rossie Lee Williams entered into peaceful rest on July 3, 2016, in the presence of members of his loving family whom will miss him dearly. He was born on February 23, 1939, in Varnville, South Carolina, to the late Mr. Odell and Mrs. Lucille Williams. At an early age, he became a member of Harmonia Baptist Church, Varnville, South Carolina, where he served faithfully and remained a member until his death. Master Sergeant Williams was a graduate of the former North District Training School, Varnville, South Carolina and did further studies at Beaufort Technical College, Beaufort, South Carolina. He enlisted in the United States Army in February 1962.
On December 23, 1963, he married the love of his life and soul mate, Ruthie Mae Robinson. This union was blessed with four children.
His military career spanned over 31 years of service in the Armed Forces of the United States, including 25 years of service in the National Guard. These years afforded him the opportunity to render many years of successful and dedicated service in a variety of positions of increasing responsibility in the Military Occupational Specialties of Infantryman, Information Systems Operator, and as a Unit Supply Specialist, culminating with his retirement in November 1988. During his span of service, Master Sergeant Williams was a member of several distinguished units, to include his active duty service in the Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 505th Infantry, 3rd United States Army at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. While serving in the Headquarters Battalion, 505th Infantry, Master Sergeant Williams was instrumental as a member of the team of Soldiers sent to assist in the desegregation of the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss); he also earned his Parachutist Badge to be airborne qualified. After ending his active duty service, he was later assigned to the United States Army National Guard/South Carolina Army National Guard, where he played a key role in the leadership education of Soldiers as an Instructor at the Primary Leadership and Development Center Region 2 in Eastover, South Carolina. Master Sergeant Williams was a Soldiers’ Soldier. He devoted his life to his family and the call of duty and service to our nation.
He was the Past Worshipful Master of the Fairview Lodge #393, Estill, South Carolina. He was a very dedicated member of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Steering Committee, where he served as Past President.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Lehmell Williams; father and mother-in-law, Mr. Percy and Mrs. Ruthie “Mae” Robinson; brothers-in-law, Mr. Charles Robinson, Mr. Edward Robinson, Mr. Cecil Capers, and Mr. James Buckner; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Owilender (Nate) McQuire, both who also preceded him in death; and a loving daughter-in-law, Mrs. Rosalyn Williams.
He passed away peacefully on July 3, 2016, at the Hampton Regional Medical Center, Varnville, South Carolina.
Cherishing his memories are: His devoted and dedicated wife of 53 years, Ruthie Mae Williams; Children: Elnora Fennell of Lithonia, Georgia (Grandchildren: Elijah, Brandon, Sean, and Bryan); Eric Williams of Covington, Georgia (Grandchildren: Marquita Slater, Ariel and Jasmine Williams); Janet (Ron) Simmons of Hughesville, Maryland (Grandchild, Lauren Simmons); Shedron (Cassandra) Williams (Grandchildren: Rozadeem Johnson, Winston Oliver, Tra-Von Williams, and Kyri Williams); and Torre Williams (Grandchild, NyAsia Jamison). Reared as a son, Dennis Bradley of Chicago, Illinois (Grandchild, Ariel). He was a very proud father and grandfather and loved his 11 great grandchildren as his own.
Master Sergeant Williams is also survived by one sister, Clara Lee Mickens, and two brothers, Willie Lee (Ida) Williams and John Perry (Caroline) Williams. He enjoyed the company of his seven sisters-in-law: Ellen Capers, Gennett Youmans, Doris (Harry) Mole, Oris Buckner, Margie (James) Fennell, Barbara (Isaiah) Doctor, and Willie Mae Williams; One Aunt, Ms. Juanita Glover; and one Uncle, Mr. Bernice (Elease) Glover.
He had a special bond with the many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends who played a very significant part in his life and gave him much joy.
