The Obituary

Early Sunday morning, June 26, 2016, our beloved Mother Florie (Flora) Miller Smith departed from this life at Ridgeland Nursing Center, Ridgeland, South Carolina.

She was one of six siblings born to the late Deacon Joe Roy Miller, Sr. and Mrs. Mary Williams Miller, of Hampton County, Varnville, South Carolina.

Realizing the need for not only a secular education but a Christian education as well, she at a young age joined Harmonia Missionary Baptist Church, Varnville, South Carolina.

Mother Smith was educated by the former Mather School of Beaufort, South Carolina.

Upon graduation, she relocated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she lived for many years.  She was gainfully employed as a general merchandise store owner.  She joined the Shiloh Temple Church under the leadership of the late Bishop Dobbs.  While in Philadelphia, Mother Florie Smith met and married the late Mr. Patrick Young.  After the death of her husband, she returned to her native state of South Carolina, choosing to live in Charleston.  In Charleston, she became a member of Greater Refuge Temple where she served as a faithful and outstanding member of the Usher Board.  Her joy was sewing hats, corsages, and uniforms for the Sunbeam Choir.

While in Charleston, Mother Florie Smith became reacquainted with her childhood friend, the late Brother Leroy Smith.  They were married and remained in Charleston, South Carolina until the death of Mr. Smith. Shortly thereafter, she was placed under the care of her nephew, Mr. Johnny (Mae Etta) Allen of Brunson, South Carolina.

In addition to her parents, preceding her in death are five siblings.

To cherish her memories are her devoted brother, Mr. Joe Nathan Miller, Sr. of the Camp Branch Community of Varnville, South Carolina; Numerous nieces and nephews, which includes her caregiver, Mr. Johnny Allen; Other relatives and friends.
