Mrs. Mary Lou Johnson, daughter of the late Mr. Dan & Mrs. Izolar Mingo Haynes, was born on June 14, 1936, in Colleton County, South Carolina.  She was called from earth’s labor on Thursday, September 1, 2016.

She received her formal education in the public schools of Colleton County, South Carolina.  After relocating to New York City, she met and was espoused to her late husband, Mr. Elijah Johnson, Sr.  To this union, were born four children.

Mrs. Mary Lou Johnson, affectionately known as “Nana”, began her work career as a school aide and a cashier for Pathmark Company.  She worked for over twenty plus years, thereafter retiring.

She attended Pilgrim Church in Brooklyn, New York, where she came to know the Lord, Jesus Christ as her personal Savior.  Through her years of service, dedication, development, and teachings, she was bestowed as Mother of the Church.  Mother Johnson loved to sing, praise, worship, and glorify God.  She was a faithful servant who served on several auxiliaries.  They included: choir member, mother’s board, and kitchen committee.

After years of faithful service, Mother Johnson returned to her native home to look after her mother. She started attending Lively Stone Temple of Islandton, South Carolina where Bishop Paul M. Capers is pastor.  Here, Mother Johnson began again to flourish, right where she had left off.   As a church mother (a woman of wisdom and knowledge), choir member, and kitchen committee worker, Mother Johnson was a faithful servant.  She did not mind sowing her money, time, kind words, and love.  Mother Johnson loved the church with her whole heart!  It could be said that Mother Johnson always would greet you with a smile and say, “praise the Lord” upon receiving a phone call.

Mother Johnson will truly be missed for all of her words of wisdom, teachings, and presence.

Preceding her in death in addition to her parents are: one sister, Liela Haynes, and one brother, Daniel Haynes.

She loved her family and friends to whom she leaves to her cherish memories: (2) Daughters: Deborah Johnson and Mary Doreen (Kenneth) Strouse, all of New York; (2) Sons: Kelvin (Julilana) Johnson of New York, and Elijah (Nyeela) Johnson, Jr. of Raleigh, North Carolina; A host of grandchildren and great grandchildren; (2) Brothers: Francis (Addie) Haynes of Nixville, S.C., and Donald (Brenda) Haynes of Tampa, Fla.; (2) Sisters: Arlene Murdaugh of New Jersey, and Lois (Gerald) White, of Miley, S.C.; Reared as a sister, Myrtis Lingard of Varnville; (2) Aunts, Ms. Hazel Mingo and Ms. Audrey Mingo; Sister-in-law, Pastor Lula Haynes of Islandton, S.C.; Numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
