Trustee Eugene Jenkins succumbed to a peaceful rest on Tuesday, March 20, 2019 at his residence, surrounded by his family. He was born on July 27, 1923 to the late Mr. Willie Jenkins and Mrs. Irene Jenkins of Varnville, SC.
He was educated in the Hampton County public school system. Trustee Jenkins was a good listener, quick learner, hard worker, and effective communicator who loved to read and learn. He was a respected only child and man ahead of his time.
At an early age, Trustee Jenkins joined New Hope Missionary Baptist Church where he was an active member and officer. He was chairman of the New Hope Baptist Church Trustee Board as well as an active member of Antioch Masonic Lodge No. 91of Varnville, SC.
During family gatherings, reunions, and other happy events, he filled everyone with humor, peace, fun filled joy and laughter.
He was a retired employee of the former Savannah River Site, Aiken, SC. Trustee Jenkins excelled in his work endeavors, passing tests, obtaining and maintaining security clearance, and critical certifications. After retirement from Savannah River Site, Trustee Jenkins dedicated his life to public service. He was later employed by the South Carolina Department of Social Services, providing transportation for the sick and shut-in, elderly, and disabled senior citizens of Hampton and surrounding counties. He became known as “the Taxi”.
Trustee Jenkins lived as he believed: the family that prays together, stays together. He was a loving and caring father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, cousin, co-worker, relative, and friend.
He was preceded in death by his father, mother, wife (Mrs. Sallie Smith Jenkins), and granddaughter, Eugenia “Gena” Jenkins.
Trustee Jenkins is deeply missed by his son, Eugene Jenkins, Jr. (Doris) of Varnville, SC; His daughters: Janet Stokes (Willie) of Orangeburg, SC, and Lucia Collins (Minister Bobby) of Varnville, SC; Grandchildren: Eugene Jenkins, III of Varnville, SC, Vickie Brown (Mike) and Kim Lomax (Bobby) of Columbia, SC, Alisha Wigfall of Charleston, SC, Vernon Jenkins of Fla., Alphonso Jenkins of Ms., and Edward Middleton (Cherry) of Charleston, SC; Great grands: Danielle Brown of Columbia, SC, Valencia Wigfall of Charleston, SC, Kateeba Jenkins of Orangeburg, SC, Kiara Brown of Rock Hill, Jasmine, Asha and Jayln, all of Charleston, SC, Kaitlyn and Julian, both of Columbia, SC; Devoted and caring nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
