Mr. Joe Nathan Miller, Sr., 85, son of the late Deacon Joe Miller and Mrs. Mary Williams Miller answered the summon of death on Sunday, March 31, 2019.  He was born April 29, 1933 in Ridgeland, Jasper County, South Carolina. 

“Nate”, as he was affectionately known to some and “Smokie Joe” to others, was educated in the public schools of Jasper County, South Carolina.  At an early age, Nate, as he was affectionately called, became a baptized member of Harmonia Missionary Baptist Church, Varnville, South Carolina. 

Nate live in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for over thirty years. He was employed for over thirty years at National Steel Drum Company in Philadelphia.  It was there in Philadelphia that Nate developed a liking to the famous boxer Smoking Joe Frazier!  He was also very fond of gospel music, especially the Dixie Hummingbirds and the Mighty Clouds of Joy. 

He was married for sixty-three years to Mrs. Virlee Samuels Miller. 

“Nate” was well known and a very liked as a person in the close-knit communities where he lived in South Carolina and Philadelphia. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one son, Oscar Miller of Philadelphia. 

Fond memories will be cherished by his wife, Mrs. Virlee Samuels Miller of Philadelphia; (5) Children: Joe Nathan Miller, Jr. of the Camp Branch Community of Varnville, South Carolina, Denise Miller-Jackson, Marlene Miller-Dorsey, Jerome Miller and Frances Miller, all of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; (7) Grandchildren; (18) Great grandchildren; A host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, which includes very special cousin, Earl Robinson, Sr. of Varnville, South Carolina.
