Mother Janie Clark was born December 6, 1931 to the late Mr. Panny Lingard and Mrs. Edith Grant in the Sandridge Community of Varnville, South Carolina.
She attended the former North District Training School of Varnville, South Carolina.
She later met and married the late Lee Clark. To this union, nine children were born. Janie and Lee relocated to New York City where they reared their children.
“Mother”, as her children affectionately called her, was one of the softest spoken and kindest person to have known. She had a heart of gold, and was sweet as candy. Mother was an amazing cook. There was always a pot of love on the stove waiting to feed every and anyone who so desired.
Mother had a great passion for playing bingo. This passion was passed down to her children and grandchildren.
After residing in New York for many years, Mother decided to move back to her native community of Sandridge, South Carolina. There she became an active member of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, Varnville, South Carolina. She was a member of the Mt. Sinai Usher Board, Mother’s Board, and sang in the Mt. Sinai Church Choir. After a brief illness, Mrs. Janie Clark’s family decided to take her back to New York to care for her. She passed away from her illness on April 4, 2017 at Brooklyn Garden Nursing Facility.
She was preceded in death by three sisters: Marjorie, Elizabeth, & Beulah, one brother, Henry Lee Lingard, all of Varnville, South Carolina; one son, Sam Clark; One grandson, Darryl Smith; and one great-grandson, Nikari Graham, all of New York.
Mother leaves to celebrate her life: Her longtime companion, Jimmy Heyward of Varnville, South Carolina; One brother, Joe (Mrytis) Lingard of Varnville, South Carolina; Three daughters: Janell (Dudley), Vanessa, and Regina, all of New York; Five sons: Nathan Jr. (Joyce), Kenneth, Darryl (Melissa), Maurice, and Bernard (Lisa); Two step-sons: Eugene Cornelius and Johnathan Simmons; Thirty-two grandchildren; Forty-two great grandchildren; Six great great grandchildren; A host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends whom she loved dearly.
