Willie Lee “Huddie” Williams, the son of the late Odell and Lucille Williams, was born on January 17, 1938, in Hampton, South Carolina. Surrounded by loved ones, Willie Lee Williams was called into eternal peace at Hampton Regional Medical Center, Varnville, SC on Saturday, August 13, 2022.
Willie received his education in the public schools of Hampton County. At an early age, he gave his life to Christ, becoming a baptized member of Harmonia Missionary Baptist Church, Varnville, SC. As a servant of the Lord, he was a member of the Trustee Board and Kitchen Committee.
Willie met and was later united in holy matrimony to Ida Mae Jackson on November 17, 1962, with fifty-nine (59) years of marital bliss.
At an early age, Willie, a hard dedicated man, started working at Tuten’s Farm where his love for farming began. Willie also worked at Brooks Funeral Home, Embler Door Company, Tuten Packing House, and Savannah River Site for many years before his retirement. With his love for music, he became the manager of “The Mighty Imposters Band” and the famous Johnny’s Spot. In his free time, he was a proud member and co-founder of the Sharp Shooters Hunting Club. An activist for his community, Willie was the co-founder of The Hampton County Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Steering Committee. He has been an active member for over 35 years. Well known for his hash, Huddie won numerous awards, notably the “Jean Laney Harris Folk Heritage Award in 2001 where he was titled “Hash Master.” He was an avid fisherman and supportive fan of Wade Hampton High School Sports.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Odell and Lucille Williams; his brothers, Lehmell and Rossie Lee Williams.
Mourning his passing, cherishing his memories and carrying on his legacy is his wife of fifty-nine years, Ida Mae Williams; Four sons: Willie Wallace (Barbara) of Windsor, SC; Darin Levon (Laverne), James Lamar (Jane), and Ronald Lee Williams all of Varnville, SC; Four daughters: Carolyn (Willie) Wesley Sr, Joyce (Raymond) Dunbar, both of Varnville, SC, Victoria (Mike) Folk and Josetta Williams both of Hampton, SC; 29 (twenty-nine) grandchildren, Twenty-five great-grands, and One great-great grand; His siblings; Clara Lee Mickens and John Perry(Caroline) Williams; Brothers and sisters–in-Law: Willie Mae Williams, Ruthie Mae Williams, James (Catherine) Jackson, Martha Garvin, Raymond Jackson, Queen Williams, Shirley (Kenneth) Brayboy, Daisy Black, JoAnn (Sylvester) Ready, Hasting (Linda) Smith, and Nellie Jackson; Aunts: Juanita Glover, Elease Glover, Emma Wright, and Sadie Green. A host of loving nieces, which includes Velma (Pastor Wayne) Carter and the late Joyce Doctor who were reared in the home as sisters, nephews, cousins, and friends.
