Eliza Mae Johnson was born on June 18, 1955, to the late Estella Walker and Willie Cave in Hampton, South Carolina. She attended Wade Hampton High School, Varnville, South Carolina. In her young adulthood, Eliza worked as a carpenter helper in Hampton, South Carolina. In pursuit of her dreams, she relocated to Brooklyn, New York. She started a career in home health aide from which she retired.
Two brothers preceded her in death: Matthew M. Walker, and Author Johnson, Sr.
Eliza leaves fond memories to four children: Leslie Johnson, Brooklyn, New York, Elton Johnson of Laurinburg, North Carolina, Pierre Johnson of Brooklyn, New York and Zabar Shabazz of Brooklyn, New York; Six siblings (four sisters and two brothers): Betty (Theodore)Smith of Brunson, South Carolina, Arrielee Walker, Barbara Gooding, Angelo Johnson, and Teresa White, all from Brooklyn, New York and Clinton Johnson of Atlanta; Ga. She also leaves eleven grandchildren; Six great grandchildren; a host of cousins and friends.
