The Biography of Bertha “Joann” F. Davis

I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all themalso that love his appearing. II Timothy 4:7-8

On the night of September 21, 2014, Bertha F. Davis passed away at Colleton Medical Center, Walterboro, South Carolina.  She was born February 14, 1952 in Colleton County, SC to the late Deacon Bert Buckner and Mrs. Albertha Capers Buckner.  Bertha was affectionately known to most as “Joann”.

As a young child, Joann surrendered her life to Christ and became a member of Toby United Methodist Church, Islandton, SC.  Initially, she served the body of Christ at Toby United Methodist as a choir member and the United Methodist Women auxiliary; but her joy was standing at the entrance of the sanctuary as an usher.  Desiring a more intimate walk with Christ, Joann was baptized in 1985 at True Holiness Church, Islandton, SC.  As a result of that experience, she received the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Joann was employed as a seamstress at the former Davan Manufacturing Company, Allendale, SC for many years.  Her employment for the past twenty-two (22) years has been as a Bus Driver for Hampton School District One.

She was married for twenty-five years to the late Mr. Harry Ferguson of Yemassee, SC.  To this union was born one child, the late Baby Girl Ferguson.  She subsequently married Elder James Elijah Davis of Walterboro, SC.

Joann had no particular hobby.  She just loved people!

Preceding her in death in addition to her parents, daughter, and former husband is one brother, Deacon Anthony Buckner.

Joann leaves to mourn her departure her husband,  Elder James Elijah Davis of Islandton, SC; (5) Children: Ingrid Shaw (Walter) of Santee, SC, Vivette Guinyard (William) of Columbia, SC, Alsene Williams (Edward), Madison, Mississippi, Shirley A Davis of Walterboro, SC, and Senae Davis of Atlanta, GA; (13) Grandchildren; (1) Great grandchild; (3) Sisters: Minister Carrie Capers (Marion), Evangelist Gloria Morris (Deacon Olden) and Ms. Mary Alice Buckner, all of Islandton, South Carolina; (1) Brother, Cornelius Buckner (Nancy) of Islandton, SC; An adopted brother, Reverend Willard Geddis (Mary Ellen) of Hampton, SC; (3) God-children: Shane Buckner of Islandton, SC, Ja-Coby Grant of Aiken, SC, and Laquasia Black of Williams, SC; (1) Uncle, Randolph Buckner (Juanita) of St. George, South Carolina; (5) Aunts: Mother Earlee Wrice of Islandton, S.C, Jessarine Bright of Walterboro, SC, Marion Bright of Ritter, SC, Flora Bell Stevens of Walterboro, S.C. and Patricia Bright of Walterboro, SC; (20) Sisters-in-law which includes Ms. Darlene Buckner of Islandton, SC;(10) Brothers-in-law; A Host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
