Life's Reflections

Pearlie Mae Coker Campbell was born on October 12, 1936 in Varnville, SC. She was the daughter of the late Rell Coker and Elizabeth Smith Coker (Hicks) and the step-daughter of the late Elkin Hicks.

Pearlie graduated from the former North District Training School in Varnville, SC. She was employed at Hampton Hospital and worked in laundry services in Washington, DC and Brunson, SC and retired from Complete Cleaning Company on Hilton Head, SC.

She was a member of Antioch Christian Church where she served as a choir member. In her later years, you could find her sitting on the end of the church pew by the window, tapping her foot to music and wearing one of her many church hats!

She loved to watch Judge Judy, General Hospital, The Nightly 6:30 News, and Bishop G. E. Patterson on Sunday afternoons. Her morning was not complete unless she cooked her grits! She would fix her son-in-law breakfast and made sure her daughters had a Sunday meal when ever they came over. To pass the time, she would sit on her front porch or under the carport doing her word search and crossword puzzles. Preceding her in death are step-brothers Tommy Hicks (Elmira, NY), Billy Hicks (Reading, PA),step-sister Thelma Shaw and step brothers-in-law Jake Shaw and Ike Shaw (Bridgeport, CT),step brother -in-law Edward Woods (Gillisonville, SC), and step-sister-in-law Dian Hicks of Bridgeport, CT.

She leaves to cherish her loving memories, two devoted daughters, Michelle Coker of Varnville, SC; Denise Glover (Tyrell) of North Charleston, SC; two grandchildren, Jasmine Robinson of Bluffton, SC; Kenneth Robinson, Jr. (Amber), of Clarksville, TN. Four great-grandchildren, Amiya Kristyn-Lee, Legend Kasyn-Lee, Blakelee Grey and Kinslee Jade. One devoted and loving brother, Willie Coker, Sr. (Ellen) of Varnville, SC; A devoted and caring nephew, Floyd Coker Jr. (Camille); Two grand nieces, Ziare Pilar and Sigourney Milan and one grand nephew, Chezerai (Xavier) all of Atlanta, GA; Four step-sisters, Mildred Woods of Gillisonville, SC; Charlotte Owens and Virginia Shaw of Bridgeport, CT; Queenester Taylor (Charles Butler), Moravia, NY, and a Step-Sister-in-law, Elouise Doe of Varnville, SC; Three-step brothers Freddie Hicks, Bridgeport, CT; Larry Hicks and Barney Hicks of Syracuse, NY; Two devoted cousins, Ida Mae Miller of Columbia, SC and Charlotte Williams, of Varnville, SC, and Helen Doctor-Windley and Jessie Doctor of Varnville, SC who are like sisters; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
