Reflecting Upon Balasha's Life

Ms. Balasha Yr’ret Horton, the daughter of Denise Horton Scott and Terry Smith, made her entrance into the world on September 12, 1991, in Newark, New Jersey. During the late hours of Wednesday, February 19, 2025, Balasha transitioned while inpatient at MCG in Augusta, Georgia.

Affectionately known as Gail, Balasha enjoyed many things. Her joys were eating a bowl of noodles not forgetting the hot sauce, and spending time with her cousins and friends. She enjoyed playing basketball and was known for her humor and jokes. Laughter was her love language.

Preceding Balasha in death were her maternal grandmother, Mary Louise Davis Horton, and her paternal grandmother, Ann Smith.

Her loving memory will be cherished by her loving mother, Denise Horton Scott (Adrian”Pete”) of Varnville, South Carolina; a loving father, Terry Smith(Latifa Ait-Lachgar) of Newark, New Jersey; her paternal grandfather, Dan Junior Horton of Newark, New Jersey; her step grandparents, Evelyn and Leon Scott of Varnville, South Carolina. She has one brother, Ibn Mu’min; one sister, Alexis Kemeya Brown; one niece, Bazair White; one nephew, Byinah White;  five uncles, all of Newark New Jersey, one uncle of Rock Hill, South Carolina, one uncle of Estill, South Carolina, and two uncles of Varnville, South Carolina; five Aunts, all of Varnville, South Carolina, and one aunt of Newark, New Jersey; one great aunt, Rose Simpson of Georgia; a great uncle, Eric Wilkerson of North Carolina; a close friend, Amber Riley; and two children that were like her own, Aubrey and Emmy; a host of cousins and friends.
