Ellis Ellsworth Griffin was born November 25, 1937, in New York City.  He passed away peacefully in Varnville, South Carolina on January 10, 2025. He was 87 years old.

Ellis was raised by his mother and father, Alma Griffin, and Wesley Griffin. He was the fourth of five children. He graduated from New York City Technical High School of New York.

Ellis devoted his life to service in the Armed Services and the community. He proudly served his country in The United States Marine Corps before embarking upon a distinguished 22-year career as a New York City police officer. His unwavering dedication to duty, and his commitment to protecting others, left a lasting impact on those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Beyond his professional achievements, Ellis embraced the beauty of life’s simple pleasures. A passionate photographer and an avid tree planter, he found joy in capturing moments and nurturing growth. He also delighted in western films, savoring a good cup of coffee, indulging in snacks that weren’t always good for him, and engaging in conversations that reflected his warmth and wit. While he sometimes told family members what they should be doing and how to do it; it was always rooted in support and much love.

Ellis was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Joan Griffin; and his daughter, Rhonda Griffin; along with two older brothers: Willard Jones, and Ralph Jones; his sister, Yvonne Williams-Dean.

Ellis is lovingly remembered by his children: Lenora Griffin, Ellis Griffin Jr., and Jacqueline Griffin as well as his brother Wesley Oliver Griffin. His cherished grandchildren: Pare Griffin, Qamarah Greig, Elise Clarke, Ahmaade Griffin, Ahmaad Griffin, John White, and Delano White; a great grandson, Mason Greig. Ellis’ bonus children: Katherine Griffin and Shannon Spigner. Ellis’ children in Christ: Lethronia Major, Mervyn Dillings and Kiera Dillings; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Ellis’ family was the cornerstone of his life and a source of immense pride. His life was one defined by service, love, and an appreciation for life’s quiet joys. Ellis’ legacy lives on through the family he held dear and the countless lives he touched. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
