Revernd Dr. Odell Joyner, Pastor & Eulogist

                                              Autobiography

I, Sadie Louise Dunbar, the daughter of the late Mr. Berry and Sadie Priester Davis was born in Varnville, South Carolina on October 3, 1937.  I was the eleventh of twelve children, three girls and nine boys.

I received my high school education from North District High School, Varnville, South Carolina with the distinction of being the 3rd Honor Graduate.

Upon graduation from high school, I enrolled at Benedict College, Columbia, South Carolina where I enjoyed an active and challenging college career graduating with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English.

During my Senior year, I was crowned Queen of the Baptist Student Union. Then the big day arrived, Graduation day!

Look out Amtrack, I am ready to ride! Two of my classmates and I took a ride to New York, New York. We couldn’t sleep. We walked and walked until about 2:30 am when I heard a man said he would be happy when we fell asleep. Things are not always as they seem.

I worked in the Bronx at the Correctional Home for girls. I was supposed to observe for two weeks. After my interview and observation, I worked the first night and after two weeks the administrator sent for me. She said she had to see me because that had never happened in New York. I worked for eighteen months there. Then the phone rang. I was called to work at the school where I finished high school. I retired after thirty years, stayed home for six years, and went back and worked three additional years. Later I was asked to work at the Alternative School for two years; and I did long term subbing. My time was up.

When I left Benedict, I said to myself I should be Holy now - Sunday School each Sunday morning, and prayer meeting on Wednesday evenings. I thank God today I attended a religious school. I didn’t know that I was already Holy. He stood by my side.

I am a member of Zion Fair Baptist Church where I serve as a Deaconess.  I am also a Past Matron of Glad Tidings Chapter #48 Order of the Eastern Star PHA, Past Most Ancient Matron of Williams-Dunbar Court #31, Heroines of Jericho, and Past Grand Most Ancient Matron for the State of South Carolina and Jurisdiction; and Past Loyal Lady Ruler for Cradle Simmons #369.  I was also inducted into the Hampton County School District One Athletic Hall of Fame for basketball. Today my motto is,“I Won’t Complain.”

In my spare time I love reading poetry, cooking, decorating, calligraphy writing, and flowers.

I was married to the late Pernell Dunbar, and we have one son: Kevin Reynard Dunbar, Sr., (Candace); one grandson, Kevin Reynard Dunbar, Jr.; one granddaughter, Kasha Jontae Dunbar; and one great -granddaughter, Ka’Mouria Alaia Dunbar.

May God continue to bless each and every one of you is my prayer. “I can do all thing through Christ who strengthens me.”  Philippians 4:13.

Remember to “Use what you can! Cut what you need to!!!”
