Mrs. Martha C. Romey transitioned to her heavenly home on Sunday, January 3, 2016. She was born to the late Sam Capers and Hattie Buckner Capers on September 22, 1940 in Colleton County, South Carolina.
Mrs. Romey was educated in Colleton County Schools. She worked in the banking industry while living in New York and later retired from Miami Dade County Water and Sewer located in Miami Florida. As a citizen of the world, Martha traveled abroad frequently and espoused beauty to all who knew her. As a woman of faith, she served in ministry at First Baptist Church in Brooklyn NY, Peaceful Zion MBC in Miami Florida until she retired and moved back to South Carolina. She continued to serve and work for the Lord at Toby’s United Methodist Church, Islandton, South Carolina until her deteriorating health impeded her abilities.
She was united in holy matrimony to Mr. James Romey on July 1, 1961; and to this union, one daughter was born.
Martha joins her parents and several brothers and sisters in heavenly rest; however, she leaves to cherish her memory her husband of 54 years, James Romey of Islandton, South Carolina and her daughter, Lorraine Romey of Upper Marlboro, Maryland. Surviving family members also include her sisters: Ms. Elizabeth Capers of Brooklyn, New York, and Mrs. Edith Mae Wright (Willie) of Bronx, New York; Her brother, Deacon Sam Capers (Evangelist Ivory) of Hampton, South Carolina. Sisters-in-law: Maggie Wiggins, Rebecca Rains, and Ida Mae Romey all of Columbia, South Carolina; Katherine Romey of York, Pennsylvania; and Pauline Johnson (James) of Augusta, Georgia. Brothers-in-law: Booker T. Romey, Hammie Romey (Julia), and Isaac Romey (Loretta) all of Columbia, South Carolina; and Robert Lee Romey of York, Pennsylvania. An Aunt: Mrs. Earlee Wrice of Islandton, South Carolina.
Beloved and cherished, Martha will be fondly remembered as “Aunt Monda”, “Aunt Moody”, and “Aunt Martha by several nieces and nephews who love her and will miss her dearly. Adding to this number are her family from the Capers, Buckner, Wrice, and extended families, classmates and friends from all walks of life.
