Mr. Herbert Leon Capers, Sr. succumbed to eternal rest on Saturday, February 13, 2016 at St. Joseph’s/Candler Hospital, Savannah, Georgia. He was born December 12, 1928 in Islandton, (Colleton County) South Carolina, a son of the late Deacon Porter Capers and Mrs. Louise Johnson Capers. He was one of three siblings born to this union.
Mr. Herbert Leon Capers, Sr. was educated in the public schools of Hampton County (the former Lewisville), South Carolina. At a very young age, he surrendered his will and became a baptized member of Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church, Cummings Community, of Early Branch, South Carolina. He served the body of Christ as a member of the Senior Choir. Born with the gift of music, Mr. Herbert Leon Capers, Sr. was also a member of a group known as the Five Stars of Joy, which later became the Singing Stars of Joy.
On January 16, 1934, he married the love of his life, the former Ms. Larceaner Thompson. This union was blessed with seven children.
He served his country in the United States Army from 1955 to 1958, just after the Korean Conflict, from which he was honorably discharged. He was an avid fisherman, and hunter; but those did not exceed his love for playing the guitar!
Mr. Herbert Leon Capers, Sr. was a retired employee of forty-two (42) years with the former Embler Door Company (which became Weyerhaeuser) of Varnville, South Carolina.
Preceding his death in addition to his parents was his wife, Mrs. Larceaner Capers; One brother, Mr. Jeffrey Capers, Sr.; One sister, Mrs. Albertha Hosendove; and one great grandson, Master Jermaine Orinthains Capers, Jr.
To cherish loving memories are his seven children: Mr. Herbert Capers (Jeanette) of Early Branch, South Carolina, Ms. Jaenell Busby of Walterboro, South Carolina, Mr. Larry Capers (Carolyn) of Varnville, South Carolina, Ms. Lula Capers of Hinesville, Georgia, Mr. Dan Capers of Walterboro, South Carolina, Mrs. Linda Flagg (George) of Brunson, South Carolina, and Mr. Jimmy Lee Capers (Laverne) of Walterboro, South Carolina; (12) Grandchildren -which includes two devoted grands: Vernetta Page and Suckeena Capers, both of Hinesville, Georgia; (29) Great grands; (1) Great great grand; (4) Brothers-in-law: Mr. Dan Horton, Jr. of Newark, New Jersey, Mr. Frank Johnson, Mr. Victor Johnson, and Mr. Judge Johnson, all of Baltimore, Maryland; (1) Sister-in-law, Ms. Virgil Johnson of Baltimore, Maryland; (2) Aunts: Mrs. Margaret Major (Adam) of Varnville, South Carolina and Ms. Eliza Thompson of Early Branch, South Carolina; An adopted child: Mr. B. J. Bradford (Ann) of Beaufort, South Carolina; His caregiver, Ms. Keona Wilson of Hinesville, Georgia; A devoted friend, Ms. Willie Mae Hartley of Hinesville, Georgia; A host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
