An earthly life of commitment, diligence and service to God ended on Monday night, September 28, 2015. God’s servant, Deacon Joe Grant, Jr., was called from toils to reward at Hampton Regional Medical Center, Varnville, South Carolina.
Deacon Joe Grant, Jr., a son of the late Mr. Joe Breland Grant, Sr. and Mrs. Pearl Davis Grant, was born December 29, 1949 in Ridgeland, Jasper County, South Carolina. He was the youngest of ten siblings.
Deacon Joe Grant, Jr. was a 1970 graduate of Wade Hampton High School, Varnville, South Carolina. Upon graduation, Deacon Joe Grant, Jr. enlisted in the United States Army. Upon completion of active duty, he was honorably discharged.
He became gainfully employed by the former Westinghouse Micarta Division (Nevamar), Hampton, South Carolina. After forty-four (44) years of employment as a senior print puller, saw operator, and treater operator, Deacon Joe Grant, Jr. retired. He was a member and past steward of Local Union #3130, Hampton, South Carolina.
Seeking and finding divine guidance, Deacon Grant surrendered his life to Christ and became a baptized member of Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church, Varnville, South Carolina. Working out his soul salvation with fear and trembling, he demonstrated fidelity by becoming an active member of various activities and auxiliaries of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church. Because of this commitment, Mt. Sinai Baptist Church chose and ordained him as a church Deacon. He later was elected as Chairman of the Deacon Board. In addition to the church body, Deacon Joe Grant, Jr. was an active and faithful member of the Nazarene Baptist Union, Nazarene Baptist Association, and the Nazarene Union Sunday School Convention (serving the convention as past president).
The joy of his life was his grandchildren, the children at the family owned daycare, and playing solitaire on the computer!
Deacon Joe Grant, Jr. was married in 1975 to the former Ms. Lennis Moore; this union was blessed with three children.
In addition to his parents, preceding him in death are five siblings: Mr. James Grant, Sr., Mr. Charlie Grant, Mr. Lewis Grant, Sr., Mr. Leroy Grant, and Mrs. Sadie Walker.
To celebrate his life and cherish memories are his loving and devoted wife, Mrs. Lennis M. Grant of the home; His children: Mr. Kelvin (Nicole) Grant of Varnville, South Carolina, Ms. B’Nita Grant of Varnville, South Carolina, Mrs. Shomoneik (Will) Brown of Aiken, South Carolina, and Mr. Ja’Coby (Shanika) Grant of Aiken, South Carolina; Five grandchildren: Amaya Grant and Kelvin Grant, Jr., both of Varnville, South Carolina, Jada Brown, Braylen Grant, Caitlyn Brown, all of Aiken, South Carolina; A god-daughter, Ms. Mary Etta Brown of Varnville, South Carolina; Two brothers: Mr. Marshall (Nell) Grant of Varnville, South Carolina, and Mr. Norris (Sadie) Grant of Varnville, South Carolina; Two sisters: Mrs. Dora Lingard of Varnville, South Carolina and Ms. Virgie Joyner of Hampton, South Carolina; A great aunt, Ms. Lizzie Young of Barnwell, South Carolina; His mother and father-in-law: Deacon Earlin Moore, Sr. and Evangelist Gladys Moore of Varnville, South Carolina; Four sisters-in-law: Ms. Lennis L. Grant of Brooklyn, New York, Ms. Sharon Grant of Brooklyn, New York, Mrs. Cathey (Danny) Grant of Blythewood South Carolina and Ms. Charlotte Grant of Patterson, New Jersey; Two brothers in Law: Mr. John Eddie Moore( Gloria) of Norfork. Virginia and Mr. Earlin Moore, Jr. of Virginia Beach, Virginia; Numerous nieces and nephews (of whom five were reared as his children: Tyria, Tina, Beverly, Lori, Mack and Windy); Other relatives and family friends.
