On Wednesday morning, November 4, 2015, Matthew Capers received the summon of death unto reward while at his residence in Varnville, South Carolina.  He was born May 10, 1954 in Varnville, South Carolina to the late Reverend Harry “HC” Capers and Mrs. Lizzie Mae Brown Capers.

Matthew was the youngest of eleven (11) siblings.  He was nurtured by his parents in a close-knit family.  Upon the death of his mother, his sister, Ms. Martha Capers, became a “second” mother to him.

At an early age, he joined Antioch Christian Church located in Varnville, South Carolina.

His early childhood education was received from the former North District Training School, Varnville, South Carolina.  Thereafter, Matthew transferred to Wade Hampton High School, Varnville, South Carolina.  He was a graduate of the Class of 1971.  Always with a thirst of knowledge, Matthew Capers enrolled in the former Miami Dade Jr. College (currently Miami Dade College), Miami, Florida.  He received an Associate Degree in Education.  Matthew earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1974 and Master of Science Degree in 1997 from the University of Miami, Miami, Florida.

Matthew taught in the Dade County Public School System for thirteen years.  Upon returning to South Carolina, he taught in the Allendale County Public School System.  His most recent employment was with the Beaufort County Public School System.  In June, 2015, Matthew retired from the Beaufort County Public School System where he was employed as the Special Education Coordinator.

Always with an inquisitive mind, Matthew explored the world through reading volumes of books; he loved gardening, entertaining, and doing “hands on” projects of various sorts!

Matthew is preceded in death by his parents: Reverend Harry “HC” Capers and Mrs. Lizzie Mae Brown Capers; and five siblings: Beulah Mae Capers, Mell Capers Lingard, Harry Capers, Jr., Joshua Capers, and Daniel Capers.

The memory of his life will forever be cherished by his siblings:  James Capers, Camp Branch Community of Varnville, South Carolina, Elijah (Minnie Lee) Capers of Hephzibah, Georgia, Martha Capers and Evangelist Elizabeth (James Lee) Smith, all of Varnville, South Carolina, and Timothy Capers of Whiteville, North Carolina; Twenty nieces; Twelve nephews; A host of other relatives and friends, which includes special friends: Mary Grant and Danny Jo Green, both of Varnville, South Carolina, Levy McCoy of Coconut Grove, Florida, and Shellie Rivers of Allendale, South Carolina.
