The Obituary

Lieutenant Mary E. Witt, 68, of 503 Willard Street Ext, died Friday, December 7, 2018 at Trident Health System, North Charleston, South Carolina.  She was born February 27, 1950 in Orangeburg, South Carolina to the late Percy Vondalee Amaker and Josephine Callaghan Amaker.

Before relocating to Hampton County, Lt. Mary E. Witt was a member of St. John’s Methodist Church of Orangeburg, South Carolina.  Recently, she attended First Christian Church of Hampton. 

She was a graduate of Edisto School District of Cordova, Orangeburg County, South Carolina and the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy of Columbia, South Carolina. 

Her life as a public servant led her to become a lifelong police officer.  She served and protected the citizens of: Orangeburg Department of Public Safety, St. Matthews Police Department, Allendale Town Police Department, and subsequently retired from the Hampton Town Police Department. 

Membership in other civic and social organizations include: the South Carolina Law Enforcement Association, Victim Advocate for the Hampton Police Department, and the Hampton County Coroner’s Office C.A.R.E. Team. 

Lt. Witt was a devoted wife and mother, who dutifully attended to the needs of her family as well as others.  But the love of her life was her dogs!   

She was married in holy matrimony to Charles Witt. 

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, is: a sister, Jeanette Martin McCaw; and a brother, Vondalee “Marvin” Amaker.

Her beautiful life will forever by cherished in the lives of her husband, Charles Witt of Hampton, South Carolina; Children: Kenneth Lee Kinsey (Teresa, also known as “DeeDee”) of Cope, South Carolina, Robert Marvin Kinsey of Washington, Rockie Vonhabsburg (Joe) of Monroe, Michigan, Charles Gene Witt of Taylor, Michigan and Cindy Kirkendall (Dennis) of Chattanooga, Tennessee; Thirty grandchildren; Twenty great grandchildren; Other relatives and loving friends.
