Early Branch—Funeral
service for Mr. Jeffery Capers, 85, of the Cummings Community of Early Branch
were held Wednesday, May 25, 2011, 2:00 P.M. at Jerusalem Missionary Baptist
Church, Early Branch, South Carolina.
Interment followed in the Jerusalem Cemetery. Bishop B. C. Williams, Jr., Pastor Archie
Seabrooks and Pastor Jesse Summers officiated.
Visitation were
Tuesday evening, Mary 24, 2011 from 7-9:00 P.M. Arrangements were entrusted
to Washington’s Funeral Home of Hampton, South Carolina.
Mr. Jeffery Capers
was born May 17, 1926 in Hampton County, South Carolina. He was the
oldest son of three born to the late Mr. Porter and Mrs. Louise “Lula”
[Johnson] Capers. He was educated in the Hampton
County public school system.
Mr. Capers was joined
in marriage to the former Ms. Alice Jenkins in 1949; and this union was blessed
with five children: Mr. Jeffery Lee Capers (Sevel) and Mr. Carnell Capers
(Josephine) all of Cummings SC, Mr. Donelle Capers (Cathy) of Harrisburg North Carolina,
Mrs. Deloris Newton of Carolina Oaks, Varnville South Carolina and Mrs. Mary Alice
Newton ( Kenyon) of Nixville South Carolina.
He also leaves to
cherish his memory, 15 Grand Children- one of whom he raised in his home,
Ponzella Wilson Black and 22 Great-Grand children. Remembering him also is one
sister Ms. Albertha Hosendove of Cummings, South Carolina and one brother Mr. Herbert
Leon Capers also of Cummings, South Carolina. Two Sisters-in- law: Mrs. Carmen
Jenkins of Milledgeville ,Georgia and Mrs. Ernestine Walker of Trenton, New Jersey;
One brother-in-law, Mr. Norris Walker of Trenton, New Jersey; Two aunts: Mrs. Elease
Brown of Brooklyn, New York and Mrs. Margaret Major of Varnville, South Carolina;
A host of nieces to include a special niece, Mrs. Lillian Busby, nephews,
cousins and friends. Mr. Capers was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and
great-grand father.
Mr. Capers had a love
for the Holy Scriptures and was known for his quick memory while quoting
scripture. Because of that same love he was affiliated with many
beliefs/religions, to include, Baptist, Holiness, and Jehovah’s Witness.
At an early age he joined Jerusalem Baptist Church, Cummings, South Carolina.
He was a hard worker
and a wonderful provider. By many, Mr. Capers was considered a “Jack of
all Trades”. He mingled in plumbing, electrical, wood work, concrete
finishing, and brick-laying. Because of his skills, he was often called
upon by family and friends for help with repairs. Over the course of his
life, he literally built 5 houses. He was quite the entrepreneur!
During the late 1960s and early 1970s, he was owner and operator of Capers
Grocery Store in Cummings where he offered the communities a full line
of various goods to include can goods, deli cuts, cakes, cookies, candy,
clothing and shoes. While he left much of the responsibilities of the operation
of the store to his immediate family, he was also a farmer and employed
full-time by Westinghouse Electric Corporation, Hampton, South Carolina.
After approximately 38 years of service, in 1985, he retired from Westinghouse.
After retirement, he continued to farm-providing fresh vegetable to family and
friends. Mr. Capers was well known in his community as he spent much time
helping others. For everyone who knew him, he will be sadly missed.
