Aiken-Funeral service for Mr. Charles D. Smith, 61, formerly of Varnville, South Carolina will be held Monday, July 6, 2009, 1:00 P.M. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's witnesses, Hampton Congregation, Hampton, South Carolina. Committal, final prayer and interment will follow in Ellis Cemetery of Varnville. Visitations will be Sunday evening, July 5, 2009, 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Born October 15, 1947, in Varnville, South Carolina, he was the son of Richmond Smith and the late Thelma Ellis. Charles D. Smith departed this life Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at Medical College of Georgia, Augusta, Georgia.
Charles was a graduate of the former North District Training School, Class of 1965. Upon graduation, Charles enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served seven and one-half years, two terms of duty in Vietnam. Charles D. Smith, in 1966, furthered his education at the Air Extension University, Fort Worth, Texas and Hampton’s Technical College of the Low Country, where he in 1974 studied industrial electricity. Since 1975, he has completed other “TEC” business courses.
Charles D. Smith was Hampton County’s first black tax collector. He retired from Westinghouse, Savannah River Site, Aiken, South Carolina.
He was married to the former Fannie Youmans of Hampton, South Carolina; this union was blessed with three children (Sabrina, Charles, Jr. and Patrice). A loving relationship continued with Florrie Youmans of Hampton, South Carolina, Hilda Grant (John) of Hampton, South Carolina and the late Hallie Youmans and Marvin Sutton.
He later married the former Jannie Ross of Aiken, South Carolina.
Charles was a dedicated, baptized servant of Jehovah’s Witness. He, until death, was very active in his service in the Aiken Congregation, Aiken, South Carolina.
His mother, Thelma Ellis, preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife: Jannie R. Smith of the home; (3) Children: Sabrina Williams of Atlanta, Georgia, Charles Smith, Jr. (Tameka) of Atlanta, Georgia and Patrice Green (Benjamin) of Charleston, South Carolina; (3) Step daughters: Janice Ross, Jennifer Hampton and Jennitra Ross, all of Aiken, South Carolina; (10) Grandchildren whom he loved dearly: Brianna Smith, Justus Smith, Timaya Williams, Madison Williams, Kierra Smith, Devonta Smith, Jordon Smith, Jasmine Smith, Joshua Smith and Jada Smith; (3) Step grandchildren; His father and mother: Richmond & Estelle Smith of Mississippi; (3) Sisters: Jacqueline Moore (Tyson) of Varnville, South Carolina, Delores Wright of Jamaica, New York and Sharon Williams of Baltimore, Maryland; (3) Brothers: Reggie Smith and Harry Smith, both of Mississippi and Renile Smith of Detroit, Michigan; A son-in-law, Mackey Williams; (1) Uncle, Adam Major (Margaret) of Varnville, South Carolina; (2) Aunts: Lillie Rose and Ruby Nell, both of Brooklyn, New York; (1) Great aunt, Margaret Grant of Savannah, Georgia; His father-in-law, Prince Hay (Thelma) of Aiken, South Carolina; (4) Sisters-in-law: Katie Evans (Paul), Linda Rice (Earl), Zelma Williams (Calvin) and Sharon; A special cousin, John (Pookie) Smith; Nieces and nephews: Detrick Ellis, Derrick Moore, Eric Moore, Erin Moore and a special niece, Nikki Moore; Jason Wright, Chrishinda Smith, Simeon Smith, Ariel Smith, Makayla Smith, Mckenzie Smith, Travis Grant, John Grant, Jr., Robin Ruth, Marvin Sutton (Johnnie M.), Marlon Sutton (Amanda), Lemyer Sutton, Darrin Sutton, Micheal Sutton, Relena Sutton and Florrie Sutton; A host of grand nieces and nephews; Other relatives and friends.
